Things to do while waiting in line for Cheese Board pizza

  • look at the fruits in the windows of the Produce Center (if the line is that long, which it very well could be)
  • eavesdrop on the conversations of modern hipsters
  • if they are in view, wonder if the numbers of the “1504” denoting the street address of The Cheese Board are actually made out of bread
  • catch up on email
  • contemplate the tasty items you could be already eating in the Epicurious Garden across the street
  • wonder what the pizza toppings of the day will be and wether they will be worth the wait and $2.50 per slice (but then remember that they always are)
  • check what the pizza toppings of the day are

Late Adopter Chronicles: the Kakuno fountain pen by Pilot

Best fountain pen on a budget, even with its (his?!) weird anthropomo branding.

Wow, the Kakuno with fine nib totally outperforms my longtime go-to fountain pen, the Lamy Safari with extrafine nib—for a third of the price. I got mine for the stunning price of 1200 yen, but it can be had in the US for about that much ($10-12 on Amazon, for instance). Writes smooth to give a generally crisp line of ink. Just wish the cap had a clip on it to secure the Kakuno to pants or backpack pockets.

The winking smiley face on the nib may add some playfulness to the pen for some, but I don’t like the idea of writing with ink coming out of the top of someone’s head.

Early Adopter Chronicles: the Apple Watch

I got it for focus, not fecundity of features.

All I do with it is check the time, weather, my physical (in)activity, reminders (with Clear or Fantastical; there’s no Apple reminders app—yet?). Occasionally it’ll alert me when VIP emails or messages have come in. Even more occasionally, I’ll Apple Pay for juice at Whole Foods. When I’d like some musical accompaniment for my jogs, I’ll play music from the watch through bluetooth headphones. That’s it.
Apple Watch, hot or not?
And that’s great. It has really cut down my screen time, reducing it from an average of an hour a day to just over 20 minutes per day (as measured by Moment), allowing me to dedicate more focus to tasks at hand. Were I to use my iPhone for the tasks above, all too soon, I’d be lost in the wealth of apps and possibilities that just unlocking my iPhone and launching one app exposes me to. If one of the main goals of the Apple Watch is to limit distraction, it’s working. Sure, it’s tech to deal with tech, but I love it. I’m curious to see if it continues to keep me simultaneously connected and focused with watchOS 2.

I already feel weird not wearing this thing.

My Idea of a Corner Office

Cost effective but ergonomically taxing.

For about $20 $10 more, I could hang out in the common areas of a coworking space, but I love the opportunities to people watch and overhear conversations here. And the cold brew coffee is fantastic.
